UMK - United Manganese of Kalahari

About Us

UMK was established in 2005 and is a joint venture between Majestic Silver Trading 40 (Pty) Ltd and Renova Manganese Investments (Pty) Ltd. Majestic Silver Trading is a majority black-owned Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) business; Renova Manganese Investment is  a fully owned subsidiary of the Russian based Renova Group of companies.

UMK is currently the 4th largest producer of manganese in the world.

Numerous years of groundwork and extensive exploration of eight farms preceded the granting of UMK’s Mining Right. In 2005 a Prospecting Right was issued to UMK for a total area of 15,200ha, and this was followed up with the Mining Right in 2008.

Prior to the granting of the Mining Right a total of 361 boreholes were drilled, yielding very good results, with the most significant manganese deposits being found on the Botha, Smartt and Rissik Farms. A total of 323.3million tonnes of manganese resources were initially identified. Based on the proven reserves at the time, the estimated mining life would extend for the duration of the current mining permit (30 years to 2038) and beyond.

Small scale mining commenced in 2008, concurrent with the development of the mine’s permanent infrastructure. Production was ramped up in 2010 to a level of approximately 2.04Mtpa run of mine, following the successful completion of the first phase of the mine development, the railway loop and the load-out silo.

Towards the end of 2011 the permanent crushing and screening plant was commissioned and it is expected that the remaining production infrastructure will be commissioned during 2012.  During 2013 the infrastructure project should be officially completed when the mine offices and the remaining non-production infrastructure will be constructed. To date the infrastructure project has been delivered within budget.
